Microsoft Surface Laptop Go

The first thing to realise about the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go is who Microsoft primarily designed this laptop for. It is meant to represent a more affordable version of its line of top end products such as the Surface Laptop 3 and the Surface Book 3. The main target audience for a more affordable laptop of this type is school and college students. It’s designed to do the basics really well, so anything that a student is likely to be interested in such as writing documents, browsing the Internet, sending emails and watching the odd movie. If you are looking for a laptop that is going to be used for processing high-end video or for playing high frame rate, processor intensive tasks, then the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go is not for you and you need to look elsewhere.

However, assuming the basics is what you are after then the Surface Laptop Go is full of desirable features such as a bright and clear 12.4 touchscreen which is perfect for scrolling through long documents or web pages dues to its 3:2 aspect ration. If watching lots of widescreen movies is your thing though, then again, maybe this is not the device for you as to watch such movies you will end up with a lot of wasted space at the top and the bottom of the screen.

Its also a good looking laptop and is well built considering the money you are likely to pay, which at the time of writing this will be about £550, but it is also light enough at around 1.11kg to carry around all day as you move from lecture to lecture. You also won’t be disappointed in the connectivity capabilities of the Surface Laptop Go as it benefits from not only USB-C but also USB-A and a standard 3.5mm headphone jack socket. There is also the obligatory webcam built into the lid which boasts a passable 720p resolution.

Microsoft Surface Go Laptop - Front

There are different options available for the Surface Laptop Go and so some models (not the cheapest ones) have a fingerprint sensor built into the power button for greater security. The cheaper ones also do not have the best memory and storage options either so you should ensure you know what you want before you part with your cash. The lower end of the range will only have 4GB or RAM and a really small 64GB of storage. Whereas if you splash out a little bit more you might get 8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage, coupled with an Intel Core i5 processor.

The cheapest of the range is still a capable machine when it comes to the basics, and so you will find no problem with web browsing but you’re not going to have too much success if you want to play even moderately serious games, but if you want to do any more than this then we would recommend opting for more storage and more RAM.

In terms of battery capability, its not too bad with a full charge lasting about 7 hours of normal use, but not much more than that, and you could easily see yourself using this laptop for more than 7 hours at a time because it is a comfortable easy to use device that makes typing documents less than tiring.

So, if you are looking for a usable, light and portable but capable, good looking laptop then the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go may be a good option.
